Liverpool was crowned Premier League champions on Sunday after a 5-1 victory against Tottenham.
The Merseyside club won their twentieth English league title to equal the record of their great rival Manchester United.
Liverpool fans celebrated inside and outside their famous Anfield stadium as coach Arne Slot sealed an impressive first year in charge of the club.
After falling behind due to an early goal from Dominic Solanke, Liverpool bounced back with goals from Luis Díaz, Alexis Mac Allister, and Cody Gapko before halftime to ensure that the celebrations were not delayed any further. Liverpool secured the result in style after halftime when Mohamed Salah added another goal, before Destiny Udogie’s own goal completed the rout.
Liverpool only needed one point to be confirmed as champions, and a packed Anfield was hoping to see nothing less than the job done at home.
In the end, the victory was so comfortable that Salah even had time to take a selfie in front of the famous Kop stand after scoring his goal.
Liverpool’s Premier League title could herald a new era of dominance in England
By winning the Premier League title this season, Liverpool has achieved what no other team in the English top flight has accomplished since 2017.
That’s being a surprise champion.
“What we know is that nobody saw us as a title contender at the beginning of the season,” said Liverpool’s coach, Arne Slot, in February.
Since Antonio Conte’s debut year at Chelsea, an outsider had not won the league.
The Liverpool title triumph is not something akin to the historic surprise achieved by Leicester in 2016. However, with some bookmakers offering odds of 13/2 at the start of the season and having to navigate the departure of iconic manager Jürgen Klopp last season, this was not supposed to be Liverpool’s year.
“The main goal in what they told me is to look at the players, give your opinion on them so that we can enter this project in the second and third year,” Slot recently commented.
However, under the direction of the Dutch manager, the Merseyside club equaled the record with its twentieth English league title earlier than expected and has potentially started a new era in the Premier League where, for the first time in a long time, the race for future titles feels open.
