The Trump Organization has started selling caps and t-shirts with the inscription “Trump 2028” in its official online store, reigniting speculation about the possibility of President Donald Trump running for a third term, despite constitutional restrictions prohibiting it.
The caps, available for $50, feature a design similar to the iconic “Make America Great Again” caps and bear the slogan “Rewrite the Rules,” suggesting an intention to challenge the 22nd Amendment of the United States Constitution, which limits presidential terms to two.
The commercial and political campaign of “Trump 2028” appears just as even in a poll by Fox News, an ally of Trump, showed an approval rating of 44%, the lowest for the first 100 days of government compared to Joe Biden (54%), Barack Obama (62%), George W. Bush (63%), and Trump’s first term (45%).
What is The Trump Organization?
Donald Trump’s business holding company manages various businesses and is currently run by the vice presidents Eric and Donald Trump Jr., sons of the American president.
In fact, Eric Trump shared an image on social media wearing the cap.
Donald Trump, the first convicted criminal to be president of the United States, has made ambiguous comments about whether to run for a third term. In an interview with NBC News in March, he stated that he is “not joking” about the possibility of running again and mentioned that “there are ways” to achieve it, without offering details.
The sale of these caps has sparked debate among legal and political experts. Some believe it could be a provocative marketing strategy, while others warn of a serious attempt to challenge the established limits of the Constitution.
The 22nd Amendment, ratified in 1951 after the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt, establishes that “no person shall be elected to the office of President more than twice.”
The initiative has also sparked discussions about possible strategies to circumvent the constitutional ban, such as running for the vice presidency and assuming the presidency after the resignation of the incumbent, or eliminating the 22nd Amendment.
To achieve a change in a constitutional amendment, two-thirds of the House of Representatives and another two-thirds in the Senate are required, or two-thirds of the states in the country must convene a constitutional convention. The Republican Party is far from that scenario.
When was the limit for presidential terms established?
The constitutional limit for presidential terms was established after the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1945, who passed away while starting his fourth term. He had been in office since 1933.
After his death, Congress wanted to ensure that this would not happen again and approved the 22nd Amendment in 1947, which was ratified four years later.
Before that, all US presidents respected the unwritten tradition of two terms, following George Washington’s example.
