Yolanda Saldívar will have to remain behind bars for a few more years. After nearly 30 years in prison for the murder of the famous singer Selena Quintanilla, the 64-year-old woman will continue to be incarcerated after her request for parole was officially denied by Texas authorities.
This decision was made considering the seriousness of the crime - the cold-blooded murder of one of the most beloved Latina artists in the world - as well as the potential risk that her release would represent for society. It was the first time that Saldívar, who is serving a life sentence, was eligible for review.
When will Yolanda Saldívar be able to apply for parole again?
Saldívar will be able to request parole again in March 2030, that is, within five years. At that time, the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles will conduct a new evaluation.
The case of the murder of the famous TexMex music figure has sparked renewed public interest following the release of the documentary “Selena & Yolanda: The Secrets Between Them”, where Saldívar insists from prison that the shooting was an accident and claims to still hold secrets about that tragic day.
After the news that Saldívar would not be released, the Quintanilla family shared an emotional statement: “Today, we are grateful that the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles has decided to deny parole to Yolanda Saldívar. Although nothing can bring Selena back, this decision reaffirms that justice is still present for the beautiful life that was taken from us, and to millions of fans around the world, too soon.”
“The legacy of Selena is one of love, music, and inspiration. She lived with joy, gave selflessly, and continues to uplift generations with her voice and spirit. Like her family and loved ones, we remain committed to preserving her memory and ensuring that her story is honored with the dignity and respect it deserves,” adds.
