Despite the controversy during her Oscar nomination, the Spanish actress Karla Sofía Gascón made her presence felt at the award ceremony on Sunday, March 2, and during the gala, she was the target of one of the jokes by host Conan O’Brien.
As is well known, the transgender protagonist of ‘Emilia Pérez’ was embroiled in a scandal after Canadian journalist Sarah Hagi recalled her 2020 posts on X with messages against Muslims, against George Floyd, and criticizing the Oscars. Although the artist deleted the tweets, the accusations against her did not cease, and she was accused of being xenophobic and racist.
“Karla Sofia Gascon is here tonight and Karla, if you’re going to tweet about the Oscars, remember my name is Jimmy Kimmel (previous host)‚” said comedian Conan O’Brien during the ceremony, while the actress, in the nominees’ section, smiled with her head down.
Karla Sofía Gascón and Her Sarcasm
The next day, the Spanish woman vented with a message on her Instagram account with a sarcastic text against the host, but before that, she thanked the Oscars for her nomination.
“Thanks to the members of @theacademy for the nomination for best leading actress, for the invitation to the gala; I really liked it, very entertaining and fun, especially its fabulous presenter Jimmy Kimmel, he is fantastic, every day he looks more like the great Conan O’Brien😘,” wrote Gascón alongside a carousel of several photos of her at the gala.
He added that “I loved hugging so many friends and colleagues on this return.” Additionally, he congratulated several of the winners and expressed further gratitude: “Congratulations to all the winners, especially to @zoesaldana @camilleofficiel @clementducol. Thanks @netflix whynotproductions_officiel #jacquesaudiard ♥️Thanks Emilia Pérez for teaching me so many things.”
Karla Sofía Gascón was one of the favorites to win the golden statuette, but after the scandal, her chances of triumph were shattered. The pressure was so intense that she did not attend the traditional nominees' gathering for the customary annual photo.
The artist herself, 52, admitted to EFE that the nomination process “was intense”.
