Winter is awards season in the United States, with events such as the Grammy Awards, the Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Awards, and above all, the Oscars. The NFL is not far behind, and taking advantage of all the media attention from the Super Bowl, this Thursday awarded the main figures of the 2024 season.
The event called NFL Honors took place at the Saenger Theater in New Orleans and was hosted by Snoop Dogg.
In the style of the hosts of other winter events, the rapper, celebrity, and new friend of Donald Trump made some awkward jokes, like when he said that the Sunday game would be “between the Eagles and the refs” and that if they win the Super Bowl, “the Philadelphia team will be loved for the first time.”
What were the main awards at the NFL Honors?
- Offensive Rookie of the Year: Jayden Daniels, quarterback for the Washington Commanders.
- Defensive Rookie of the Year: Jared Verse, outside linebacker for the Los Angeles Rams.
- Comeback Player of the Year: Joe Burrow, quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals.
- Defensive Player of the Year: Pat Surtain II, cornerback for the Denver Broncos.
- Offensive Player of the Year: Saquon Barkley, running back for the Philadelphia Eagles.
- Coach of the year: Kevin O’Connell from the Minnesota Vikings.
- Walter Payton Man of the Year Award: Arik Armstead, defensive end for the Jacksonville Jaguars, for his community service.
Who was chosen as the MVP of the 2024 season?
In a close vote, Josh Allen, the quarterback of the Bills, was chosen as the MVP of the 2024 NFL season.
Allen received 27 votes for first place compared to Lamar Jackson's 23, the QB of the Ravens.
Although statistically the 2024 season was not the best of his career, Allen was key in helping Buffalo reach the final of the American Conference, where they lost in a dramatic (and controversial) manner to the Chiefs.
This is the first time that Allen has been chosen as the best player in the NFL.
Who are the new members of the Hall of Fame?
During the NFL Honors ceremony, the members of the Class of 2025 Hall of Fame were announced: Eric Allen (former cornerback for the Eagles and Raiders); Jared Allen (defensive end for the Vikings); Antonio Gates (tight end for the Chargers), and Sterling Sharpe (wide receiver for the Packers).
The striking thing was the absence of Eli Manning, winner of two Super Bowls with the Giants, who was eligible to be voted for the first time.
