EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey, USA (AP) — The era of Daniel Jones in New York has ended.
The Giants' quarterback was released by the team on Friday, days after the franchise announced they would be demoting him to the bench in favor of the third-string quarterback, Tommy DeVito.
"Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if we could release him," said Giants president John Mara in a statement. "We mutually agreed that would be best for him and the team. Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first class in every way."
Mara added that he was "disappointed" by Jones' quick dissolution of the relationship with the team.
"We hold Daniel in high esteem and greatly appreciate what he has done for us," Mara continued. "We wish him nothing but the best in the future."
Jones, 27, told reporters on Thursday that he had given everything he had to the team after being selected sixth overall in the 2019 draft and believes he still has a future in the NFL. He took responsibility for the fact that the Giants (2-8) have only made the playoffs once during his time as a starter.
Jones took control at the beginning of his rookie season when then head coach Pat Shurmur benched Eli Manning, a two-time Super Bowl MVP who was nearing the end of his career.
Coach Brian Daboll benched Jones on Monday after the Giants returned to practice following a week off and after losing 20-17 to Carolina in Germany the previous week.
Tommy DeVito will start on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Daboll is hoping he can revitalize the team.
“I am definitely not happy with this,” said Jones, who read a 90-second statement before answering reporters’ questions on Thursday. “Yes, it’s not what you want to hear. So, yes, you have all those emotions. But at the end of the day, this is football. We are in a business where results are expected and we weren’t achieving them.”
