WASHINGTON (AP) — The commander of a United States Space Force base in Greenland has been fired after sending an email to the entire base that went against the official message following Vice President JD Vance’s visit to the Danish territory that President Donald Trump is seeking to annex.

In a statement issued on Thursday night, the Space Force reported that Colonel Susan Meyers was removed as commander of the Pituffik Space Base in Greenland due to a “loss of confidence in her ability to lead.”

“The commanders are expected to adhere to the highest standards of conduct, especially in terms of remaining impartial in the performance of their duties,” the statement said.
Military.com reported on Thursday that Meyers sent an email to all site personnel defending the base’s relationship with Denmark and Greenland following Vance’s visit two weeks ago.
A US official confirmed to The Associated Press on Friday that Meyers sent the email showing support for Greenland and Denmark. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity to provide additional details that were not made public.
Greenland is a territory of Denmark, which is a NATO ally of the United States. Trump wants to annex the territory, claiming that it is necessary for national security purposes, and Vance’s visit at the end of March sparked heated rhetoric between the United States and Denmark, with Trump refusing to rule out the use of military force.
In a post on X on Thursday night, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell linked to the Military.com story and stated that “actions to undermine the chain of command or subvert President Trump’s agenda will not be tolerated in the Department of Defense.”
Meyer’s dismissal was the most recent in a series of dismissals of high-ranking military leaders, including several female leaders.
The Trump administration has previously dismissed the Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Lisa Franchetti; the Coast Guard Commander, Admiral Linda Fagan, and the Navy Vice Admiral, Shoshana Chatfield, the only woman on the NATO military committee.
Other key dismissals were General CQ Brown Jr., Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and General Tim Haugh, Commander of the Cyber Command and Director of the National Security Agency.
