WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump remained defiant on Monday as global markets continued to fall following his announcement of tariffs last week.

In a post on his social network Truth Social, he said that other countries had been “taking advantage of the good United States.”

“Our ‘leaders’ of the past are to blame for allowing this, and much more, to happen in our country. LET’S MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” he stated.
Trump has insisted that his tariffs are necessary to rebalance global trade and rebuild national manufacturing. He has pointed to China as “the biggest abuser of all” and has criticized Beijing for increasing its own tariffs in retaliation.
The Republican president also asked the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates. On Friday, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell warned that tariffs could increase inflation, and said that “there is a lot of waiting and watching, even on our part,” before decisions are made.
Trump spent the weekend in Florida, arriving on Thursday night to attend a tournament funded by Saudi Arabia at his golf course in Miami. He stayed at Mar-a-Lago, his private club in Palm Beach, and played golf at two of his nearby properties.
On Sunday, he posted a video of himself hitting a drive and told reporters aboard Air Force One that night that he had won a club championship.
“It’s good to win,” said Trump. “Did you hear that I won, right?”
He also said he would not back down on his tariffs despite the turmoil in global markets and fears of a recession.
“Sometimes you have to take medicine to fix something,” said Trump.
On Monday, the president was scheduled to receive the Los Angeles Dodgers at the White House to celebrate their victory in the World Series. He will also meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and they are expected to hold a joint press conference in the afternoon.
