Amid tensions over President Donald Trump’s assertions that Greenland should be part of the United States, Vice President JD Vance arrived with his wife Usha and a delegation to the large island. He warned them that Denmark has little regard for the Greenlandic people, and did not rule out the possibility that in the future they may decide to become independent from the Danes.

According to The New York Post, the vice president criticized the Danish government on Friday for not protecting and promoting the development of Greenland, inviting the island’s inhabitants to break free by becoming part of the United States.

He emphasized that his position is not against the Greenlanders, but against the Danish government. "Our argument is very simple. It is not with the people of Greenland, whom I believe are incredible and have an incredible opportunity here. Our argument is really with the leadership of Denmark, which has invested little in Greenland and has invested little in its security architecture," said the second-in-command of the United States government.
Vice President Vance was direct in his message to Denmark: “You have not done a good job for the people of Greenland... You have invested little in the people of Greenland, and you have invested little in the security architecture of this incredible and beautiful landmass full of amazing people.”
Vance says that in Greenland they are going to choose and ruled out military force
Vice President Vance raised the possibility of holding elections for Greenland to decide if it wants to separate from Denmark and become part of the United States.
“What we believe is going to happen is that the Greenlanders are going to choose, through self-determination, to become independent from Denmark, and then we will have conversations with the people of Greenland from there,” Vance said.
He went on to say, “I think talking about something too far in the future is too premature. We don’t believe that military force will be necessary. We think this makes sense and because we believe that the people of Greenland are rational and good, we believe we will be able to reach an agreement to ensure the security of this territory, but also of the United States of America.”
The high-ranking official visited the Pituffik Space Base of the United States on the northern coast of Greenland, where he met with the high command present there to discuss military operations and strategy. The Post also reported that they discussed unexploited economic resources.
Greenland has been a controversial topic for President Trump, who has earned the condemnation of high-ranking Greenland officials. It is the largest island in the world and among its riches are rare earth deposits, essential for the technology and electronics industry.
