What did the Prime Minister of Greenland say about the visit of a US delegation to the territory?
“It must be emphasized that our integrity and our democracy must be respected without any foreign interference,” Egede wrote on his Facebook account.
The visit comes at a complex time for the island. Since the defeat of his left-wing environmentalist party, Egede has been leading Greenland on an interim basis, awaiting the formation of a new government.
In this context, Egede specified that there will be “no meeting” with the delegation: “It was clearly informed to the Americans that meetings can only take place once the new government takes office, following the recent legislative elections,” Egede added.
Covered in 80% ice, this huge Arctic island with 57,000 inhabitants, almost 90% of them Inuit, has hydrocarbons and important minerals for energy transition, which is why it has become quite a target for the US president. Greenland is an autonomous territory in the Kingdom of Denmark.
Without ruling out the use of force, the Republican leader has reiterated time and time again his desire to take control of this territory considered important for US security against Russia and China.
In an interview on Sunday with the Greenlandic newspaper Sermitsiaq, the prime minister stated that the United States' only objective is “to take over the country.”
“The new American administration does not care about what we have built together. Their only goal is to take over our country, without consulting us.” The Prime Minister insisted that this is not “just a bland visit from the wife of a political figure.”
“Why would a national security advisor go to Greenland? Their only goal is to impose a show of force. Their mere presence in Greenland will reinforce Americans' belief that annexation is feasible, and pressure will increase after this visit,” he said.
