The President of the United States, Donald Trump, once again sparked controversy with his comments after harshly criticizing actor George Clooney in a post on his social network Truth Social. Trump’s reaction came after an interview by Clooney on the CBS program “60 Minutes.”

In the interview, the actor expressed his concern about the state of freedom of the press and expression in the United States. During the conversation, the actor reflected on the crucial role of the press as the “fourth estate” when the other three – executive, legislative, and judicial – fail in their responsibility to protect democracy.

Donald Trump’s strong comments against George Clooney

In his message, Trump referred to Clooney as a “second-rate movie star” and a “failed political commentator,” questioning the program’s decision to give him space to share his opinion. “Why would the now discredited ’60 Minutes' program publish an exaggerated article about George Clooney, a second-rate movie star and a failed political commentator?” Trump wrote.

Additionally, he recalled the actor’s initial support for President Joe Biden during the elections and how he later withdrew that support, according to him, on orders from the Obama team. Clooney’s words seemed to unsettle Trump, who has maintained a tense relationship with the media since entering the political stage.

Clooney’s interview was in the context of promoting the theatrical version of his movie “Good Night, and Good Luck”, which addresses the figure of journalist Edward Murrow and his confrontation with Senator Joseph McCarthy during the “witch hunt” in the 1950s.

The feud between George Clooney and Donald Trump grows

George Clooney, known not only for his film career but also for his political and social activism alongside his wife, human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, has been an outspoken critic of Trump’s administration. On previous occasions, he has expressed his concern about the weakening of democratic institutions and the growing disregard for freedom of the press.

The confrontation between Trump and Clooney revives the debate about the relationship between political power and the media, as well as the right of public figures to express critical opinions. While some consider Trump’s statements to be part of his provocative style, others see them as an attempt to discredit and silence those who question his political views.
