Coco 2: A Long-Awaited Return

Although the sequel is still in its early stages of development, Coco fans are already excited about what’s to come. Bob Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Company, shared some details during the company’s annual shareholder meeting, held in March 2025: “While the film is still in its early stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart, and adventure. We are looking forward to sharing more details soon.”

Filmmakers Adrian Molina and Lee Unkrich will return as directors of the sequel, with Mark Nielsen once again in the role of producer. With the original team on board, it is expected that Coco 2 will continue the legacy of its predecessor, bringing to the screen a story that resonates with new generations while still celebrating the rich Mexican culture.

When will Coco 2 arrive in theaters?

The highly anticipated release of Coco 2 is scheduled for 2029. Although the exact date has not been confirmed yet, the movie is in the early stages of development, so we will have to wait a little longer to get detailed information on the progress of the production. What is certain is that, like other recent sequels such as Inside Out 2, Coco 2 will seek to revive the nostalgia of the first film while connecting with a new audience.

Although the plot has not been revealed yet, it is expected that the sequel will follow the steps of Miguel, the 12-year-old boy who in the first movie defied family expectations to pursue his passion for music. The story promises to continue exploring his journey towards fulfilling his dream and will undoubtedly continue to share with the world the essence of the Day of the Dead and other Mexican traditions.

The success of Coco

The first installment, which premiered at the Morelia International Film Festival on October 20, 2017, was inspired by Mexico’s traditional Day of the Dead and quickly became a global phenomenon. “Coco” received praise from both critics and audiences, standing out for its cultural sensitivity and beautiful tribute to Mexican traditions.

The original film achieved impressive recognition, including two Oscars: Best Animated Film and Best Original Song for “Remember Me”. Additionally, the work was filled with details, such as the 500 pieces of clothing specially created for the characters, based on Mexican folklore.
