The agency warned that an exterior panel running along the left and right side of the windshield may come loose while driving, posing a danger on the road for other drivers and increasing the risk of an accident.
What is the issue with the Cybertruck that is forcing its recall?
The NHTSA report indicated that the stainless steel strip, called the edge rail assembly, between the windshield and the roof on both sides, is attached to the truck assembly with a structural adhesive. The solution uses an adhesive that has not been found vulnerable to “environmental fragility” and includes additional reinforcements, according to the agency.
Tesla will replace the panel at no cost. Notification letters to owners are expected to be sent on May 19, 2025.
The recall of 46,096 Cybertrucks covers all models from the years 2024 and 2025, manufactured between November 13, 2023, and February 27, 2025. The NHTSA order indicates that Tesla became aware of the issue earlier this year.
Videos posted on social media showing people ripping off the Cybertruck panels with their hands have gone viral in recent days.
The Cybertruck, which Tesla began delivering to buyers in late 2023, has been recalled eight times in the last 15 months due to safety issues, including once in November due to a failure in an electric inverter that can cause the drive wheels to lose power.
Last April, the futuristic-looking trucks were recalled to fix accelerator pedals that could get stuck in the interior lining. Other recalls were related to windshield wipers and the display screen.
It adds to the problems for Tesla because of Elon Musk
It is the latest setback for Elon Musk’s electric car manufacturer, which has been under attack since President Donald Trump took office and empowered Musk to oversee a new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) that is making deep cuts to the public workforce.
Although no injuries have been reported, Tesla dealerships, vehicle lots, charging stations, and privately owned cars have been attacked.
Even before the attacks escalated in recent weeks, Tesla has been struggling, facing increasing competition from rival electric vehicles, particularly from China.
Although largely unaffected by Thursday’s announcement, Tesla’s shares have fallen 42% in 2025, reflecting a new pessimism as sales plummet worldwide.
