“With a heavy heart 😔 Rest in peace my buddy Tato Hernández @somosonosomo, a sports journalist I worked with some years ago. Tato battled against prostate cancer since last year and his health recently deteriorated, as he told me a few days ago in one of the many messages we constantly shared. I will cherish all the good memories, jokes, conversations, and this interview I conducted with you in April for @metropr 🙏🏼 You no longer suffer, brother. You fought, you were brave. May God have you in his glory," wrote the Nalgorazzi."
Similarly, in an interview with Fernan Vélez in his column “Primero con El Nalgo” in Metro Puerto Rico, Hernández recounted how he found out he had cancer.
“I started with a very strong pain in the lower part of my back. It wouldn’t go away and made it difficult for me to walk. I had an MRI done. I had herniated discs but they asked me to check my prostate as the inflammation was being reflected lower down. I had some blood tests done and my prostate was at 20. Then they asked me to have a colonoscopy which showed 40. Later, I had a prostate biopsy done and it showed 90 and tested positive for cancer. They called me to go in as it was not good news. By then, I could barely walk.”
“Dad, you have stage 3 prostate cancer and metastasis in the pelvis.” When he said “metastasis,” my world collapsed because it was affecting my bones. I started to cry (he cries in the middle of the interview). One of the things I never thought about, because I lost my mom, who was my support and I overcame it. But when the doctor told me that, my world fell apart," Hernández said.
Tato Hernández worked at various stations of the Spanish Broadcasting System (SBS), specifically at Z93, and also had a sports segment on El Circo de La Mega for a while.
In addition, he worked with several Major League Baseball (MLB) figures such as Juan “Igor” González and Iván Rodríguez, as a personal assistant and manager.
