After winning the Super Bowl and being one of the best players of the 2024 season, the Eagles extended Barkley's contract.

The signing of Saquon Barkley will go down in history as one of the best deals of this century... or one of the worst from the perspective of the Giants. The New York team let him go, the running back became a free agent, he was signed by the Eagles, and in 2024 he was the star of the team that won the Super Bowl.

Barkley ran for 2,504 yards in the regular season and playoffs, breaking Terrell Davis’s record for most combined rushing yards in a single season.

In the regular season, he accumulated 2,005 yards and came close to breaking Eric Dickerson’s historic record, but the coach chose to rest him in the last game to ensure he was fit for the playoffs. In the end, it proved to be the right decision.

As a reward for his contribution, and also to secure him for many years in Philadelphia, the Eagles made Barkley the highest-paid running back in NFL history.

How much is Barkley’s new contract with the Eagles?

In March of last year, Saquon signed a three-season contract with the Eagles for a total of $37.7 million.

Now, the Philadelphia team decided to grant him a two-year extension (until 2028) worth 41.2 million dollars, with $36 million guaranteed. Additionally, according to The Associated Press, Barkley’s new contract includes 15 million in incentives.

Barkley will be the first running back in professional football history to earn more than 20 million dollars per season.

What will the Eagles do in free agency?

The new contract for Barkley comes just a few days before the official start of NFL free agency.

The Eagles announced this Tuesday that they released veteran cornerback Darius Slay, saving around $4 million towards the salary cap.

Additionally, the Philadelphia team still has to make a decision about the future of linebacker Zack Baun: either renew his contract or let him leave as a free agent.
