It used to be said that traveling by plane was extremely safe, because compared to land transport, the accidentes did not use to happen as frequently, but it seems that in this 2025 the situation changed.
According to what has been reported by the National Transportation Safety Board, there were 62 plane accidents in the month of January, of which 10 were fatal, such as the one that took place in Washington D.C., resulting in a total of 67 deaths.
The first airplane accident on North American territory happened on January 2, 2025, in Fullerton, California, resulting in one fatality. And on January 31, seven people in Philadelphia lost their lives due to another accident.
Have airplanes become unsafe?
So far in the month of February, there have been 25 other incidents in the United States, three of which have been fatal. In fact, this year there have been four major fatal air disasters in a span of two weeks, which occurred in Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Alaska, and Arizona.
On February 6, a small plane carrying 10 people crashed in Alaska after losing speed and altitude and disappearing from the radar. It departed from the village of Unalakleet and was headed to the city of Nome. There were no survivors, confirmed the Alaska Department of Public Safety.
On February 10, two private planes collided at Scottsdale Airport in Arizona, killing one person and leaving four injured.
So far, there are no explanations as to why so many consecutive plane accidents have occurred, beyond the technical failures presented by the aircraft over which the pilot has no control.
It is expected that the number of accidents will not increase, since it has already been surprising that there were 9 accidents in less than two months, which has caused many passengers to distrust this means of transportation.
