According to The Hollywood Reporter magazine, Netflix, the distributor of Emilia Pérez in the US, Canada, and the UK, has decided to distance itself from the Spanish actress amid the controversy surrounding her. This comes after old tweets resurfaced where the actress criticized various communities, including practitioners of Islam and the Black Lives Matter movement. The film, directed by Jacques Audiard, has received 13 Oscar nominations, but its lead actress will not be participating in the main events organized in California.

Is Karla Sofía Gascón missing out on all of Emilia Pérez's promotional events?

Although the interpreter's team assures that they have not received an official communication from the platform, THR notes in its report that some organizers of the scheduled events had expressed their discomfort with Gascón's presence and may have reconsidered their participation if the actress was not removed from the promotion.

The schedule of galas and award ceremonies in California intensifies this weekend, and Gascón was scheduled to attend several events. She had confirmed her attendance at the Critics Choice Awards gala, as well as representing Emilia Pérez at the Producers Guild (PGA) ceremony, where she was even supposed to present an award. Her participation in the Santa Barbara festival was also scheduled, where she was going to receive the Virtuoso Award along with other prominent performers such as Selena Gomez and Kieran Culkin.

After the emergence of controversial tweets, Gascón has apologized but has also claimed to be a victim of cancel culture. In a message on Instagram, the actress has expressed her gratitude to Emilia Pérez's team and has vindicated her right to freedom of expression.

"They want to apply cancel culture to me. For years, I felt lost in my transition, seeking approval in the eyes of others. But today I know who I am. I just want the freedom to exist without fear and to continue creating art without barriers."
