In comedy, timing is very important. The host of the 2024 Grammys, Trevor Noah, did not have this in mind last night after making a joke before introducing Shakira that caused a backlash against him on social media.
Faced with a moment of tension and uncertainty, as well as indignation over Donald Trump's policies against immigrants in the United States, which could result in tens of thousands of deportations, the presenter made a comment that, although ironic, was not well-received by the attendees and even less so on social media.
The moment happened when Trevor Noah was introducing some celebrities, among them the Colombian, who was one of the stars of the night, and joked saying that she is "the biggest thing to come out of Colombia, that's not a serious crime".
Who is Trevor Noah?
Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Trevor Noah is a comedian, writer, producer, political commentator, actor, and presenter, best known for his role on The Daily Show on Comedy Central, where he was the host for seven years. Additionally, this was his second time hosting the Grammy Awards.
Beyond comedy, the South African also hosts an interview podcast on Spotify, titled 'What Now?' and is also the author of the book 'Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood', a best seller.
The comedian on The Daily Show is famous for making satirical humor and during Donald Trump's first administration, he was constantly critical of the Republican. Even during the Grammys 2025, he also joked that the US president could deport him soon.
This is not the first time the presenter has been in the middle of controversies because of his comments, back in 2022 he made a mention about racism and the moral superiority of European analysts and journalists when talking about Ukraine and its white refugees.
Meanwhile, in the midst of the crisis over deportations in the United States, Shakira took advantage of her triumphant speech to send a message of support to migrants: “I want to dedicate this award to my migrant brothers and sisters in this country. You are loved, you are valuable, and I will always fight alongside you,” expressed the Barranquilla singer upon receiving the award in the Latin Pop Album category for Las mujeres ya no lloran.
