Beyoncé won the Album of the Year award for “Cowboy Carter” on Sunday at the 2025 Grammys, finally achieving the top honor of the ceremony that had eluded her.

The superstar, who is both the most awarded and nominated artist in Grammy history, had been a candidate in this category four times before and many felt she had been snubbed.

By winning the Album of the Year award with "Cowboy Carter," Beyoncé also became the first black woman to win the top Grammy award in the 21st century. The last one was Lauryn Hill with "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill," 26 years ago. Before her, there were Natalie Cole and Whitney Houston. This means that Beyoncé is only the fourth black woman to win the Album of the Year award at the Grammys.

Members of the Los Angeles Fire Department presented the trophy to Beyoncé on Sunday, one of several times the show reflected the recent wildfires that destroyed thousands of homes.

"Many, many years have passed," Beyoncé said in her speech. "I want to dedicate this to Mrs. Martell," she said, referring to Linda Martell, the first black woman to perform at the famous country music venue Grand Ole Opry.

"Finally, we saw it happen, everyone," said host Trevor Noah, acknowledging the long-awaited achievement for one of the groundbreaking music artists.

Kendrick Lamar won the Song and Record of the Year award for his diss track "Not Like Us", taking home two of the top honors of the night.

"We are going to dedicate this to the city," Lamar said before mentioning the neighborhoods in the Los Angeles area.

It is the second hip hop single to win in this category. The first one was "This Is America" by Childish Gambino.
