The images of actress and singer Selena Gomez crying over deportations in the United States went viral on social media, and the government of President Donald Trump responded, stating that they will not apologize and will continue with the measure.
The artist, born in Texas and of Latin descent on her father's side, appeared distraught in videos she posted on her Instagram stories, expressing, "I just want to say that I'm very sorry. They are attacking all my people, and mainly the children. The way they are doing it is not right, they are treating them like criminals when they are really here fighting for a better life and trying to support their families," said Selena Gomez, who placed a Mexican flag with the phrase: "I'm sorry."
Minutes later, he deleted the videos without explaining the reason, but his attempt to remove any trace was not enough, as users quickly spread it on digital platforms.
Trump's government to Selena Gomez: "Go to Congress and change the law"
On behalf of the Trump administration, Tom Homan, known as 'The Border Czar' and in charge of deportations, responded to Selena Gomez by stating that from this administration, there will be no apologies, and the measure will continue forward.
During Trump's presidential campaign, Homan, commissioner of border affairs and immigration policy, stated that he will carry out the largest deportations in the history of the United States. So, this Monday in an interview with Fox News, he said when asked about the attitude of the artist that "if they don't like it, then go to Congress and change the law (...) We will carry out this operation without apologizing. We are going to make our community safer (...) All of this is for the good of this nation, and we will move forward."
He indicated that "I don't think we have arrested any families, we have arrested public threats to national security."
He emphasized that “what happened at the southern border in these last four years is a significant threat to the national security of this country because we have seen a 600 percent increase in sex trafficking and a record number of terrorists crossing the border who are on the watchlist. We are going to enforce the laws of this country.”
