However, he warned that the visa restrictions, as well as reinforced inspections at customs and borders for Colombian citizens, will remain in effect until the first plane with deportees successfully returns.

White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt emphasized that President Trump will continue to defend the sovereignty of his nation and hopes that other countries will fully cooperate in the deportation of their citizens illegally present in the United States.

How did this conflict between Trump and Petro originate?

The conflict between both nations intensified after Colombian President Gustavo Petro denied entry to two previously authorized repatriation flights. In response, Trump announced the imposition of a 25% tariff on all Colombian products, with the threat of increasing it to 50% within a week. Additionally, he ordered the revocation of visas for high-ranking Colombian government officials and their families, stricter inspections at customs, and the suspension of visa issuance at the consular section in Bogotá.

On the other hand, Petro responded by announcing a 25% tariff on American products imported to Colombia, escalating the commercial and diplomatic retaliations.

The agreement reached seems to have halted the confrontation between the two countries. According to reports, the United States will continue to use military planes to deport undocumented immigrants to their countries of origin.

Despite the resolution, tensions have not completely disappeared. Trump shared an image on his social network Truth Social generated by artificial intelligence in which he appears dressed as a mobster next to the initials FAFO (“Fuck Around and Find Out”), which generated multiple reactions on social media.

The United States is Colombia’s main trading partner, exporting mainly refined oil, gold, aluminum, coal, coffee, and flowers to the North American country. On the other hand, Colombia is a key buyer of American corn, although it ranks 23rd on the list of US trading partners.
