The nominations for the 2025 Oscar Awards have generated mixed opinions, highlighting not only the films with the most nominations, but also the notable absences. Emilia Pérez leads with 13 nominations, followed by The Brutalist and Wicked with 10 each. However, the omission of noteworthy works has sparked surprise and debate.

Dune 2 received 5 nominations, including Best Picture, a considerable achievement for many releases. However, compared to its predecessor's 10 nominations, this result feels lacking. The absence of Denis Villeneuve in the Best Director category has been particularly striking, considering the monumental effort behind the film. Likewise, the technical aspects, which were crucial in the first installment, received less recognition than expected.

The snub of Gladiator 2 has also been a prominent topic, especially the exclusion of Denzel Washington from the Best Actor nominees. Many were expecting the veteran actor to compete for his third statuette, but his name did not appear among the finalists. Although Kieran Culkin, star of A Real Pain, seems to be the undisputed favorite of the season, Washington's omission remains surprising.

Margaret Qualley and The Substance

La Sustancia, a box office hit in the horror genre, managed to sneak into 5 categories, including Best Picture. Demi Moore, the film's protagonist, is the favorite for Best Actress. However, Margaret Qualley, who also delivered a standout performance, was left off the list, a decision that many consider unfair.

Alex Garland's work, Civil War, was widely acclaimed in 2024, but it did not receive a single nomination at the 2025 Academy Awards. Neither its script, performances, nor direction caught the attention of voters, leaving out a film that will surely be remembered despite this snub.

The prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa, maintained the quality that characterized the saga, although without the surprise impact of its predecessor. Despite its solidness, the film did not receive any nominations, not even in technical categories, where many expected to see it compete.
