“I do the same thing”: Petro orders a significant increase in tariffs for products from the United States

The diplomatic tension between Colombia and the United States continues to escalate. In response to an action taken by Donald Trump, President Gustavo Petro has decided to increase by 25% the tariffs applied to imports coming from the United States.

The current situation arises from President Petro's determination to deny entry to Colombia for two planes coming from North America with repatriated nationals.

Among several measures, Donald Trump, the president of the United States, announced strict decisions that include the imposition of a 25% tariff on products from Colombia, increasing to 50% within a week. Additionally, it was revealed that visas for Colombian government officials, along with their allies, sympathizers, and families, have been canceled.

Petro responds with tariffs on products from the United States

The Colombian president addressed the issue in two statements. At the end of a lengthy declaration, he mentioned that he would take the same action.

"They inform me that you put a 50% tariff on our human labor product to enter the US, I will do the same," Petro told Trump.

In another statement, the President of Colombia explained: "He has instructed the Minister of Foreign Trade to increase import tariffs from the United States by 25%. The Ministry must collaborate to redirect our exports to all countries other than the United States. We need to expand our exports. I urge all Colombian communities abroad to become promoters of our products. U.S. products that will see a price increase in the national economy must be replaced by local production, and the government will provide support to achieve this."
