And it was during his speech at the Capital One Arena in Washington, while thanking the people for supporting Donald Trump, Elon Musk pounded his chest and raised his right arm stretched upwards and to the side. He did it twice. The first time, he faced the audience from the podium, then turned around and did the same. "My heart goes out to you," he said.

“The elections come and go, but these have been really important. And I want to thank you for making it possible... Thank you all, the future of civilization is assured,” said the magnate owner of Tesla and X before hitting his chest and extending his right arm, as reported by El Diario.

He added: "Thank you! My heart is with you." The attendees did not hesitate to give him a standing ovation.

While pounding his chest, Elon Musk pressed his lips as if reinforcing the emphasis of the greeting he was giving to the 20 thousand people present.

The Nazi salute is a gesture that means "Hail, my leader!" and was a way in which people addressed Adolf Hitler.

Criticism of Elon Musk for his "Nazi" salute

Criticisms for Elon Musk's "Nazi" salute were quick to appear on social media. Users have shared the video of the moment, resulting in thousands of views and comments.

The journalist Aaron Ruper released the recording with a title of "um" and wrote: "Elon Musk just greeted Hitler".

Mary L. Trump, niece of Donald Trump and opponent of the Republican, uploaded the video and wrote: “For all those who said our comparisons with the Nazis were hyperbolic”.

"Elon Musk just made the Nazi salute on TV, at the president's inauguration," "Elon Musk casually doing a Hitler salute in front of millions," were other comments on X.

The Mirror presented the opinion of Jared Holt, from the Institute for ISDGlobal, which investigates extremism, hatred, and misinformation. He stated, "I am incredibly skeptical that this was intentional. (Also, that's not how you do a Nazi salute!) Musk wants to stay cozy in this administration and this would be an incredibly dumb and useless act of self-sabotage. I'm not convinced."

Despite his gesture, Musk did not make any hateful remarks and, in addition to his joy for Trump's inauguration, he was happy about the announcement of sending a man to Mars made by the new US president, which would bring direct benefits to one of the South African's companies.
