The highly anticipated sequel to the Oscar-winning historical epic Gladiator, will soon be hitting home screens. Gladiator II, directed by Ridley Scott, will be available on Paramount+ starting January 21. Additionally, its physical media version, including DVD and 4K Ultra HD Steelbook, will be on sale from March 4, 2025.
The movie, which debuted with an impressive opening weekend of $87 million internationally, has now accumulated $454 million at the global box office. This release set a record for Paramount Pictures as the highest-grossing R-rated film in its opening weekend in international markets. It also ranked among the top three international successes for Imax in the past year.
The plot follows Lucius, played by Paul Mescal, who is forced to fight in the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the tyrannical emperors of Rome. On his journey, he seeks strength in his past to restore glory to his people.
The cast includes prominent actors such as Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen, Joseph Quinn, and many more. Written by David Scarpa, Peter Craig, and David Franzoni, the film combines brutal action with palace intrigue.
Physical release and prices
Fans who prefer physical formats can purchase the DVD for $18.89 (regular price $25.99) and the 4K Steelbook edition for $44.92 (regular price $50.99) at Walmart.
Film critic Owen Gleiberman, from Variety, described Gladiator II as "a solid piece of neoclassical entertainment", highlighting the bloody battles, palace intrigues, and decadence that characterize the story.
Ridley Scott, in addition to this success, has other great achievements to his name such as The Martian and Prometheus, which grossed 630 million and 403 million dollars worldwide, respectively.
