Donald Trump, recently elected president of the United States who will take office on January 20, spoke about the future of TikTok in the country. Through his social network, on Truth Social, he stated that “in the not too distant future” he would make a decision about the app that is owned by China.
What does Trump think of TikTok?
"The decision of the Supreme Court was expected, and everyone must respect it. I will make my decision on TikTok in the near future, but I need time to review the situation. Stay tuned!" indicated the reposted on his Truth Social network.
Trump made these statements after the Supreme Court of the United States backed the law that could force TikTok to suspend its operations in the country before January 19, for not having separated from its parent company ByteDance.
While it would be Joe Biden's responsibility to take action that day to ensure the app stops operating in the country, the White House decided to leave that responsibility to Trump, who officially takes office on January 20, one day after the set date.
The application would stop working in the United States due to a law passed by Congress, where both Democrats and Republicans voted in favor.
The Supreme Court decision gave ByteDance nine months to sell TikTok's operations in the US to an investor who was not considered an "adversary" of the country, and since this did not happen, the app will be progressively banned starting on January 19th for "national security" reasons.
Trump tried to ban TikTok during his first term
Trump tried to ban TikTok during his first term (2016-2021), but all indications are that he is now in favor of it continuing.
The reason why the app would be banned is that they fear that the data of American users could be exposed and used against the country.
