The Washington Post interviewed a couple who will remarry after having divorced 50 years ago. Bob Wenrich and Fay Gable were very young when they decided to get married because Fay, who was 16 years old, was pregnant.

Under a tree in Bob’s backyard, who was only 21 at the time, they got married in 1951.

This is the story of Bob Wenrich and Fay Gable

After having four children and settling in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Bob worked as a house painter while his wife worked as a nurse. They got divorced 24 years later.

They remained friends and never lost communication. They would see each other during shared celebrations of their children and grandchildren.

“Many times, divorce is bitter and painful and people never get over it,” said their younger daughter, 64-year-old Carol Smith. “But our parents did. They even used to sit together on the same church bench.”

Why are they getting together?

After both of them became widowed with their new partners, Carol noticed that they were feeling lonely, so she invited them both to play card.

Sooner rather than later, the couple felt affection. “They started spending a lot of time together and it was obvious that they really enjoyed each other’s company,” Carol added.

Fay, 89, said she told Bob, 94, that she just wanted to continue being a good friend. “I said, ‘We’ll see,’” Bob recalled. “She came over and patted me on the knee, and I told her I didn’t want anything to happen,” Fay said. “Bob. But you have such a beautiful knee.' And we continued from there.”

During a trip to the casino in Morgantown, Bob hit the jackpot and knew that “Fay was my good luck charm”.
