Miami has been for years the refuge of many Latin celebrities seeking to enjoy luxury and exclusivity in their residences. Among the most coveted destinations is the Porsche Design Tower, an iconic skyscraper that has attracted music and sports stars.
However, this luxurious condominium located in Sunny Isles Beach faces a threat that not only puts the value of the properties at risk, but also the safety of those who reside in it, including celebrities like Maluma, Thalía, and Lionel Messi.
A recent report from the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Sciences at the University of Miami has revealed that the land where the tower is located is experiencing significant subsidence. This news has raised alarm among both the building's residents and experts in the field, who warn about the possible consequences of not addressing this issue urgently.
The sinking and its impact on the stability of the building
According to the study conducted by the university, the ground beneath the Porsche Design Tower is composed of sandy layers in the underlying strata, which is causing the sinking of the structure. Specifically, the limestone in this area contains approximately 50% of sandy layers, which are responsible for this sinking process, identified as significant by experts.
Although the Porsche Design Tower, with a height of 195 meters, was designed to withstand natural disasters and offers all the amenities of a luxury building, the situation has worsened over time. The report indicates that, although the tower was opened in 2017, the first signs of sinking were recorded since its opening. Furthermore, it has been pointed out that the sinking phenomenon has been intensified by the massive construction of coastal infrastructure in the area since 2014.
A growing problem in modern buildings
The report also highlights that subsidence is a recurring problem in several modern structures built after 2014, due to the type of soil they were built on. As for older buildings, subsidence began to be detected after construction works were carried out near the existing buildings.
Architect Gerardo Fiedaman, who analyzed the report on the show Desayuno Americano, described the situation as serious, pointing out that the rising sea levels and adverse weather phenomena further exacerbate the issue for the Porsche Design Tower.
"The sinking of the Porsche Design Tower is a serious problem that requires immediate intervention. These types of situations not only affect the infrastructure, but also represent a risk to the safety of the residents," stated Fiedaman.
What will happen to the properties of the celebrities?
With well-known names such as Maluma, Thalía, and Lionel Messi among the homeowners in the Porsche Design Tower, the concern for the future of the tower is even greater. Despite the seriousness of the sinking, so far there has been no action plan presented by the authorities or the owners themselves to address the situation.
This lack of action has caused concern among residents, who fear that the deterioration of the tower will continue without effective measures being taken to protect both the properties and the safety of those who live in them.
Messi, for example, has an apartment in this luxurious building, but currently lives in a mansion he bought in Fort Lauderdale.
Porsche Design Tower, designed by the famous German company, has several luxuries, including the ability to park cars inside the apartments.
