Fashion at the Golden Globes: Ariana Grande swaps Glinda’s pink for pale yellow silk

The season of big events for Hollywood has started.

LOS ÁNGELES (AP) — Buckle up, fashion fans! Some of Hollywood’s most cutting-edge stars are competing for awards this year and it’s going to be a season full of events. The Golden Globes kick it all off, as the stars (and their stylists) stake their claim at one of Hollywood’s most eye-catching events. The big trend this year: lots of sparkle and shine.

Here are some of the styles that caught attention on Sunday at the Golden Globes:

  • Ariana Grande, from pink Glinda to yellow Hepburn: She did not wear pink, Glinda the Good's favorite color. But the star of "Wicked" evoked another Ozian color: yellow (from the yellow brick road, of course) in haute couture by Givenchy. The dress was made of pale silk with hand-embroidered details on the chest, a vintage dress from what the designer calls the Audrey Hepburn era at Givenchy. She complemented it with a Swarovski necklace.
  • Cate Blanchett shining in gold: she looked like a trophy statue coming to life in a dazzling golden dress with a gathered top by Louis Vuitton, which she also wore at the Cannes Film Festival.
  • Ali Wong, fiery in red: Actress and comedian Wong did not go unnoticed on the red carpet: she wore a cascading dress of bright red tulle, the color of a fire truck. The Balenciaga number was paired with a satin belt and glamorous black spandex opera gloves, reaching almost to the shoulder.
  • Tyler James Williams educates the masses: the actor from "Abbott Elementary" never plays it safe or boring on the red carpet. On Sunday, he sported a grey pinstripe suit with a cropped double-breasted jacket, dramatic shoulder pads, and a peek of bare chest, paired with loose-fitting pants.
  • Glen Powell, a hitman (of fashion): he dispensed with the tie and instead channeled a casual glamour with a brown open-neck shirt and black velvet jacket, from Giorgio Armani.
