Trump challenged Obama by promising to return the old name to the highest mountain in the United States

The new leader will undo the name change order issued by Democrat Barack Obama in 2015.

Nine years after Barack Obama changed the name of the highest mountain in the United States, now the new president-elect Donald Trump has promised to restore its former name to the iconic location.

Since 1917, the peak was called Mount McKinley in honor of the country's 25th president, William McKinley, who was assassinated in 1901. Obama changed the name to Denali in honor of the native community of Alaska, as recalled by the New York Post.

The 20,000-foot mountain is located in Denali National Park and Reserve in south-central Alaska. The aforementioned outlet reported that Donald Trump stated he will restore its former name, as the late President Mount McKinley deserves it.

“They took away its name from Mount McKinley… He was a great president… That is one of the reasons why we are going to bring back the name of Mount McKinley because I believe he deserves it,” Trump said this Sunday in Phoenix.

The Post remembered that President McKinley increased protective tariffs to promote the United States industry and led the country to victory in the Spanish-American War.

Highest mountain in the United States and a historical change

Barack Obama signed in 2015 the order to change the name of the highest mountain in the United States, which was recognized as a peak in 1975. At that time, he argued that he was doing so because McKinley never visited this mountain and had no "significant historical connection" to the site or to Alaska.

He proposed the name Denali, which means 'the High One' in honor of the natives of this area of Alaska.

The Post said that this is not the first time Trump has tried to return his name to the highest mountain in the United States, as in 2017 he met with Republican senators from Alaska to do so.
