Although there are already tunnels and bridges with high-speed trains such as the Bullet Train and the Eurostar in Europe, Musk's proposal for a super-hypersonic transatlantic tunnel is unique in its class, as it would involve crossing the Atlantic Ocean.
Heraldo USA reported that with the hypersonic tunnel, Elon Musk plans for travel between New York and London in 60 minutes with trains reaching speeds of up to 3,000 miles per hour (mph). The journey would cut eight hours off a flight.
The billionaire offered his company, The Boring Company, to build the tunnel, which would have an estimated cost of 20 million dollars. He stated that it would strengthen the connection between America and Europe, which in turn would enhance the commercial and touristic aspects of both continents.
What would the technology be like for the tunnel between New York and London proposed by Elon Musk?
Heraldo USA explained that the innovative aspect of the hypersonic tunnel between New York and London, proposed by Elon Musk, "lies in the use of vacuum tubes that will revolutionize high-speed transportation with the 'hyperloop' concept, which involves creating a vacuum inside the tunnel, allowing trains to move without air resistance."
Due to being an unprecedented project, there are several concerns, such as oceanic pressure, seismic risks, underwater conditions, as well as worries about it being an experimental ‘hyperloop’ technology; environmental impact on marine ecosystems and carbon emissions are also concerning.
