The aforementioned source states that Mangione is a frequent user of "Unabomber" online forums. Sources suggest that he apparently hated the medical community due to how they treated his sick relative. They believe he acted alone in the homicide.
At the time of his arrest as the main suspect in the murder of Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, the man was found in possession of a 9mm pistol, a silencer, a US passport, four fake IDs with names used during the killing spree in New York City, and a two-page handwritten document containing "quotes from his Goodreads account of the anti-establishment madman Ted Kaczynski, the infamous 'Unabomber' who terrorized the country for nearly two decades by planting deadly bombs before being captured in 1996, sources said," as reported by The Post.
Some of Kaczynski's quotes say, "imagine a society that subjects people to conditions that make them terribly unhappy and then gives them drugs to take away their unhappiness."
It goes on to say: "Science fiction is already happening to some extent in our own society. Instead of eliminating the conditions that depress people, modern society gives them antidepressant medications. In fact, antidepressants are a means to modify an individual's internal state in such a way that allows them to tolerate social conditions that they would otherwise find intolerable."
