After outgoing president Joe Biden pardoned his son Hunter Biden, this Monday, U.S. president-elect Donald Trump reaffirmed his intention to pardon all those who participated in the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot.

"It was an abuse and a judicial error," wrote Trump through Truth Social about the sanctions against those who stormed the Capitol to reject the certification of the 2020 election results. He called them "hostages" and made it clear that pardoning them will be a priority of his government.

This is not the first time that Donald Trump promises full amnesty for all those charged in the assault on the Capitol. In January 2022, the Republican stated that if he returned to the White House, this would be one of the first actions he would take.

Who would be pardoned by Donald Trump?

The Washington Post reported that the new president's spokespeople stated that pardons will be considered "case by case," however, they did not provide names of who could be pardoned.

The aforementioned media outlet recalled that during his campaign, Trump did not rule out pardoning members of extremist groups such as the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers.

If pardons were to be granted, they would be a slap in the face to the democrats, who condemned the assault on the Capitol at all times.

Trump reminded that he will carry out this measure just after Joe Biden notified on Sunday night about the pardon of his son Hunter.

"I believe in the judicial system, but as I have discussed this issue, I also think that politics has infected this process, leading to an abuse of justice," said Biden in a statement, who had previously ruled out judicial pardon for his son.

The news of the pardon for Hunter Biden surprised various sectors because before this, the president had assured at all times that he would not pardon him. “I will stick to the jury’s decision. That’s what I will do and I will not pardon,” Biden said, as recalled by AP.
