Cher, the renowned artist, has shared in her recent memoir, “Cher: The Memoir Part 1,” intimate and painful moments from her personal life. In these pages, she recounts a heartbreaking episode that led her to the edge of a balcony in Las Vegas.
Cher's story with Sonny Bono began when she was a 16-year-old and he was 27. Despite formalizing their union in 1969, Cher describes how by 1972 she felt trapped in a marriage lacking love and happiness. At 26, in a moment of deep loneliness, she contemplated the idea of jumping from a balcony in Las Vegas.
The artist recalls in her book the feeling of dizziness and desolation she experienced on that balcony, seeing how easy it would be to disappear. During a few minutes of despair, she considered the option of taking an irreversible step towards nothingness, repeating this thought several times.
Strength of emotions
What stopped the artist from taking that transcendental step were thoughts about her loved ones: her son Chaz, her sister Georganne, and her mother Georgia. The idea of the impact it would have on them made her reflect and reconsider her actions.
In her book, she also reflects on how her extreme actions could influence those who admired her. She acknowledges that such acts could be interpreted as a viable solution by her followers, which led her to reconsider her situation.
This critical moment in Las Vegas marked a turning point in Cher's life, making her realize that she didn't need to resort to such drastic measures. It was then that she decided she could simply leave behind the relationship that was tormenting her.
After the incident in Las Vegas, the artist and Sonny Bono discreetly separated and eventually filed for divorce in 1974. Despite a legal battle for custody of Chaz, they managed to find peace between them and reconcile.
