One of the things that went viral during the campaign of the elected president of the United States, Donald Trump, was his characteristic dance. Although it was first seen years ago, simply being the way the politician dances, it was during these elections that it went viral and now has become so popular that it has turned into a celebration for many American athletes.
The characteristic dance in which Trump shakes his fists, moving them along his body, became more viral since last month, when the Republican decided to interrupt a campaign event and instead play some of his favorite music for over 40 minutes, swaying and dancing to the rhythm of classic songs from events like "YMCA" by The Village People. From there, the dance has been the protagonist of memes and challenges on the internet and has now become a celebration that athletes use after scoring any goal or victory in their disciplines.
Which athletes have celebrated by doing the popular 'Donald Trump dance'?
It all started the weekend after Trump's re-election, with San Francisco 49ers' defensive end, Nick Bosa, who is a public supporter of Trump. The football player celebrated a tackle with a dance in the Niners' victory in Week 10 over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Bosa, who usually shrugs after catches, was joined by some teammates in the dance and when asked what inspired him, he said: "I think you know the answer to that question".
Following this case, which caused a stir on social media last Saturday at UFC 309 with the presence of Trump himself, Jon Jones celebrated retaining his heavyweight title by dancing before greeting the former tycoon.
On Sunday, there were multiple interpretations of the "Trump dance" throughout the NFL, with Detroit Lions defensive end Za'Darius Smith, Las Vegas Raiders tight end Brock Bowers, and Tennessee Titans wide receiver Calvin Ridley all performing it.
Bowers was asked about the dance after the game and said: "I've seen everyone do it. I watched the UFC fight last night and Jon Jones did it. I like watching UFC, so I saw it and thought it was great," he explained to USA Today.
The British golfer Charley Hull also did the walk dance on the fairway at Pelican Golf Club in Florida during the ANNIKA event on Sunday.
The most recent case occurred this Monday, in St. Louis, with the star of the United States men's national soccer team, Christian Pulisic, who performed a dance to celebrate after scoring the first goal in his team's 4-2 victory over Jamaica in the Concacaf Nations League quarterfinals.
The AC Milan player, however, emphasized that his celebration “was not a political dance”: “I saw everyone doing it yesterday in the NFL, I saw Jon Jones doing it and we were just having a little fun. I thought it was a pretty fun dance,” he said according to The Athletic.
