The new Trump administration would already be looking for locations and making all necessary arrangements with prison companies to expand immigrant detention centers to house them before they are deported to their countries, all as part of Donald Trump’s campaign, reported NBC News.
At the moment, there are around 41,000 beds designated by Congress in Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention, but the Trump administration plans to double this number.
Detention of entire families
The new president's administration plans to "detain parents with their children, known as family detention, which immigration advocates have criticized and which the Biden administration halted in 2021," sources said, as explained by NBC News on its website.
Trump’s plans are already being carried out by his team, which is evaluating certain facilities that Biden closed and that could be reopened to have more prisons, all as part of the effort for mass deportation.
Already, Trump's transition team is analyzing how many immigrants could be housed in each county, both in Republican and Democratic regions.
Denver, Los Angeles, Miami, and Chicago
"NBC News reported that cities with large migrant populations, such as Denver, Los Angeles, Miami, and Chicago, may need to have more detention centers built nearby to hold arrested migrants. The government may also have to reopen, expand, or build new facilities in the northeast to hold arrested migrants near New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, according to the source."
During his presidential campaign, Donald Trump repeatedly promised that his administration would have the "largest deportation operation in the history of the United States."
Karoline Leavitt, spokesperson for the transition team, said in a statement: “The American people reelected President Trump by a resounding margin, giving him the mandate to implement the promises he made during the election campaign. He will fulfill them.”
