Why did Alcon Entertainment sue Elon Musk and what was his response?
Alcon Entertainment filed a lawsuit last Monday alleging that during the launch of Tesla's autonomous Robotaxi, images generated by artificial intelligence representing scenes from 'Blade Runner 2049' were used without authorization.
The event, which was broadcast live globally from the Warner Bros. Discovery studios in Burbank, California, featured an 11-second segment that included images imitating the visual style of the movie, including a character similar to K, played by Gosling, and a futuristic vehicle inspired by the iconic Peugeot from the film.
According to Alcon, days before the event, Warner Bros. Discovery requested permission to use images from the movie, a request that was rejected by Alcon's co-CEOs, Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson. The production company insisted that it did not want 'Blade Runner 2049' to have any relationship with Musk or his companies, due to his "highly politicized and arbitrary" behavior. Despite this refusal, the images were used, leading Alcon to sue Musk, Tesla, and Warner Bros. Discovery for direct copyright infringement, vicarious and contributory infringement, as well as false endorsement.
Elon Musk wasted no time in responding to the news of the lawsuit: "That movie sucked," he wrote on his X account (formerly Twitter). For their part, neither Tesla nor Warner Bros. Discovery have made any official comments about the lawsuit.
