Dominican rookie Jhonkensy Noel hit a home run in the ninth inning, when the Guardians were one out away from being down 3-0 in the American League Championship Series. David Fry did the same in the tenth inning, and Cleveland tightened the game against the New York Yankees, beating them on Thursday by 7-5 in an electrifying game.

The images of this terrible collapse of the Yankees, revived the nightmare of the 2004 Championship Series against none other than the Boston Red Sox, the great rival of the New York team. That time, the “Bronx Bombers” were leading the series 3-0 and the Game 4 4-3 until the bottom of the ninth inning. But despite having Mariano Rivera on the mound, the best closer in history, the Sox tied the game, took it to extra innings, and won 6-4 with a home run by David Ortiz in the 12th inning.

After that the collapse of the Yankees grew bigger and the Red Sox won the next three games and won the World Series for the first time since 1918.

Thanks to that victory over the Yankees, the Red Sox broke their long 86-year drought... currently the longest drought is held by the Cleveland Guardians (formerly known as the Indians), a franchise that has not won the World Series since 1948.

How was Cleveland's comeback against the Yankees?

Bo Naylor opened the tenth inning with a single against Clay Holmes before Venezuelan Brayan Rocchio moved him to second base with a sacrifice bunt. Naylor advanced to third on a groundout before Fry, who had hit a home run that saved the divisional series against Detroit, connected on a 1-2 sinker and sent the ball into the left field stands.

Fry was greeted by his ecstatic teammates. The Guardians found a way to overcome two consecutive home runs by Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, which had put the Yankees very close to going up 3-0 in the American League final and getting closer to a 41st appearance in the World Series against Dominican closer Emmanuel Clase.

Cleveland was winning 3-1 in the eighth inning before Judge's two-run homer. Stanton then followed with his solo home run.

When Cleveland was losing 5-3 and seemed on the verge of defeat, Lane Thomas hit a double off Luke Weaver in the ninth inning and Noel tied the score.

Now Cleveland has closed the gap to 2-1 and they can tie the series with a victory in the fourth game, scheduled for this Friday.
