The captain of the Patriots arrested for allegedly attempting to strangle his girlfriend

Jabrill Peppers was released on bail.

BRAINTREE, Massachusetts, USA (AP) — Patriots’ captain Jabrill Peppers was arrested over the weekend for assault, strangulation, and other charges following an altercation at a residence, police confirmed on Monday.

Peppers, 29, appeared in court in Quincy on Monday for the reading of those charges. They also include assault and violence with a dangerous weapon and possession of a Class "B" substance, suspected to be cocaine, according to court documents.

Braintree police indicated that they received a call early Saturday morning, requesting them to go to a house due to a dispute between two individuals. One of the individuals received treatment at the scene, they added.

According to the charges, Peppers threw his girlfriend to the floor, pressed her head against the wall, and put his hands around her neck to strangle her. Police reported that the woman received treatment at home for injuries to her face and knees.

Peppers was arrested and paid a $2,500 bail. His next court appearance was scheduled for November 22, but he will be able to be absent.

In court, Peppers' lawyer, Marc Brofsky, said that the evidence in the case "raises genuine doubt about the allegations, including video evidence." He pointed out that Peppers agreed not to have contact with the woman.

Coach Jerod Mayo reported in a teleconference on Monday that the team is gathering all the information regarding Peppers' arrest to proceed. He mentioned that, for the time being, Peppers will be allowed to enter the team facilities.

“No sabemos lo suficiente para decir que no puede estar en el edificio”, indicó Mayo.

Peppers, a safety who is in his third season with New England, signed a contract extension this summer. Peppers was drafted by Cleveland in 2017 and spent two seasons with the Browns before spending three seasons with the New York Giants.

Peppers, who has been dealing with a shoulder injury, did not play on Sunday in the 15-10 loss against the Miami Dolphins.
