A spokesperson from the hospital where the athlete was confirmed that she died early Thursday morning after her organs failed and that she was completely sedated from the moment she was admitted to the hospital.

The Ugandan Athletics Federation said on social media that "it deeply saddens us to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei, early this morning, who tragically fell victim to domestic violence. As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest in peace.".

Who was Rebecca Cheptegei?

The exact circumstances that led to this heinous incident are still under investigation. Local authorities, including the Trans Nzoia County police, are conducting a thorough investigation to clarify the facts and determine responsibilities.

Cheptegei's father accused that the perpetrator of the crime, Dickson Ndiema, had not been caught yet and could flee the country, despite suffering burns and being treated at the same hospital.

Joseph Cheptegei also mentioned that his daughter bought a piece of land in Trans Nzoia to be close to the numerous sports training centers in the county. A report presented by the local chief stated that the two were heard arguing before the attack over the land where the athlete's house was built.

Cheptegei, who finished in 44th place in the Olympic marathon in Paris, was a prominent athlete in her country and region. Her career was an example of perseverance and dedication, qualities that led her to compete in one of the most important sporting events in the world.

The attack against Rebecca Cheptegei is a brutal reflection of the dangers that many women face, regardless of their fame or achievements, and underscores the urgent need to effectively and decisively address gender-based violence.
