Why don’t Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry kiss in ‘The Union’?
Throughout the 109 minutes of the movie, viewers may notice that these two characters, who are old high school sweethearts, never kiss despite the romantic tension between them, which generated some curiosity. And for this, there is a reason.
Julian Farino, the director of the film, explained at the Los Angeles premiere that this decision was widely debated during production. "We took the relationship to a certain point, and then we decided to leave room for more," Farino told Variety. "From the beginning, Netflix told us to think of this as a possible trilogy. So, if the audience comes out wanting to see that kiss, I think we've done our job well."
Farino, accompanied by Berry and Wahlberg on the red carpet of the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, delved into how this approach could be key for future installments. Berry also shared her vision: "Once they kiss, it's over. We hope that if we manage to make a sequel, that pursuit continues."
Wahlberg agreed with the actress, adding that if they end up making more movies, “there will be much more than just a kiss”. The intention behind this choice was clearly to maintain the romantic tension between the characters and leave the audience wanting more.
