Hurricane Beryl made landfall today in Mexico: it reached Tulum as a category 2 with winds of 175 km/h.

The weather phenomenon triggered all alerts in the southeastern region of Mexico.

Hurricane Beryl, currently classified as a category 2 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, reached Mexican territory, making landfall early Friday, July 5th north of Tulum, in Quintana Roo at 05:05 hours.

In the next few hours, it is expected to move west-northwest at a speed of 24 km/h over the Yucatán Peninsula.

Path of Hurricane Beryl in Mexico

According to the National Meteorological Service (SMN) of the National Water Commission (Conagua), Hurricane Beryl arrived in Tulum with maximum sustained winds of 175 kilometers per hour (km/h) and gusts reaching up to 220 km/h.

In anticipation of Beryl's arrival in Mexico, the National Meteorological Service (SMN), in coordination with the National Hurricane Center (NHC) of the United States, has established a prevention zone for the effects of this phenomenon from Puerto Costa Maya to Cancun, Quintana Roo, including Cozumel.

The cloudy bands of Beryl will cause torrential rains of 150 to 250 millimeters (mm) in Campeche, Quintana Roo, and Yucatan. Wind gusts of 120 to 140 km/h and waves of 4 to 6 meters high are expected on the coasts of Campeche.

Areas of Mexico that could be affected

The impact of Beryl is already being felt in several regions of Mexican territory. In Quintana Roo, authorities have implemented emergency measures and have evacuated vulnerable areas to ensure the safety of the population. Temporary shelters have been activated and essential supplies are being provided to those affected. Additionally, the armed forces and rescue teams are on high alert to respond to any eventuality.

The Early Warning System for Tropical Cyclones in Yucatan has also activated a Red Alert in the state due to the imminent arrival of Hurricane Beryl.

Potentially deadly conditions in Mexico due to Hurricane Beryl

On its part, the CNH has reported that following Beryl's arrival in the Mexican Republic, dangerous hurricane-force winds, cyclonic storm surges, and damaging waves are expected. The population residing in the affected areas has been advised to seek shelter, as these potentially deadly conditions could occur today.
