The young man was arrested
The Cincinnati police arrested 19-year-old William Hendon, from Cleves, for a serious crime of criminal trespass and obstruction of official business, a misdemeanor, as shown by court records.
The charge of a serious crime was changed to a lesser offense on Wednesday at the request of the prosecutors.
The congratulated the fan
Hendon "knowingly ran onto the Reds' playing field during the game without permission to do so", wrote an officer in one of his criminal complaints.
Another court document states that Hendon deliberately obstructed the legal duties of a public official and "did so with the purpose of delaying his arrest by fleeing from the police."
Hendon was booked into the Hamilton County Justice Center at 10:51 pm on Tuesday and detained overnight without bond, according to the jail record. Less than 12 hours later, Hendon, still wearing his Johnny Bench Reds t-shirt, appeared before Hamilton County Municipal Court Judge William Mallory.
The judge congratulated Hendon for his backflip and added that he got his "15 minutes of fame", but now it is prohibited at the Great American Ball Park.
Hendon, a student at Ohio State University, pleaded not guilty and the judge released him on his own recognizance. The case will return to court for a pre-trial hearing on July 3rd.
